Identifying Characteristics of Long Length of Hospital Stays (LLOS)

Long length of hospital (LLOS) stays can have a negative impact on both the physical and mental health of patients and is expensive for the NHS. This study comprised of two parts:

  1. A rapid literature review approach to identify characteristics of patients at risk of a long length of stay and whether existing tools were available applying risk factors to identify this group of patients

  2. An analysis of linked data which identified a cohort of patients who had long hospital stays and their associated characteristics. Providing a deeper understanding of these patients is the first step to understanding what interventions might be best placed to reduce LLOS.
